When I used to tip on golf myself, many years ago, I was always trying to speculate and conjure up theories into how I could find players who would be mispriced in the market.
After all, as tipsters, that is ultimately what we are seeking, is it not?
A few of those theories involved backing young players who had yet to reach their true potential. Another was backing golfers from Asia who I believed were just less popular among punters, who perhaps preferred to be patriotic and stick with their favourite players.
One golfer who fits both those theories is 22 year old Japanese start Ryo Hisatsune. With 3 wins on the Japanese Tour and an Open de France trophy on his mantlepiece, it might be hard to argue that he’s still under rated by the bookies, but 80/1 is enough to tempt me in.
This isn’t my selection by the way. I’m sticking to my new process of tracking who the best tipsters are backing and following their advice. Hisatsune was one of two players to get 7 points using this system, the other player? Matt Fitzpatrick. But at the half the price I didn’t fancy backing him. And hard to imagine a US Open champion, English at that, is going to be value.
So who fancies the Japanese star this week. Dave Tindall, Matt Cooper, Sundog Monkey and TheBunkerTips.
If you are wondering how 4 tipsters equates to 7 points (if anyone is following that closely), it’s because I put more weight to the better tipsters. Makes sense right.
Enough of that nonsense. So why Hisatsune in this event? Well he’s playing well for starters. 4th in the Valspar, 5th in Texas Open and 6th at Colonial, he’s been kind to each way backers this season.
He produced a few decent rounds here last year. After an opening 75 he battled back to finish just outside the Top 30, so has proven he can shoot a decent number on this track.
It’s also not the only Donald Ross course he’s produced some good golf on, he was 3rd in the Wyndham Championship last year at Sedgefield, suggesting his game is well suited to the challengers created by this well renowned architect.
