The 2023 NFL season was one that captured the hearts and imagination of fans the world over. Throughout the course of the campaign, recent heavyweights such as the Cincinnati Bengals and the Philadelphia Eagles faltered. Meanwhile, teams that have been perennial strugglers such as the Detroit Lions and the Cleveland Browns finally had their time to shine under the spotlight. But in the end, it was the usual suspects that reigned supreme.
That of course was the Kansas City Chiefs. The Arrowhead outfit have reached at least the conference championships in each of the last six years and despite having a less-than-stellar regular season, they managed to achieve that feat once again last term. They then knocked off the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and the Baltimore Ravens – despite being heavy underdogs on the road in the latter two – to reach Super Bowl LVIII. Once there, they again revealed in their status as underdogs, knocking off Brock Purdy and his San Francisco 49ers to secure their second straight Lombardi and their third in five years.
But with attention now turning toward the 2024 campaign, what are two things that fans should be looking out for?
New York Jets End Their Postseason Drought
Last year, the New York Jets were one team that betting sites considered an outsider for the Lombardi thanks to their marquee trade of superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers. However, his season ended just six minutes into his debut with a campaign-ending injury, and the Big Apple outfit never recovered. Next season, both he and the Jets will be aiming to right the wrongs of 2023.
The MetLife Stadium side is without a postseason appearance in 14 years, the longest drought in the league and by some distance. They last reached the playoffs way back in 2010 when they secured consecutive trips to the AFC Championship game, both of which ended in defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts. Now, with their four-time MVP under center and firing on all cylinders, they can expect the 2024 season to be the one that 2023 should have been.
Chiefs Complete the Three-Peat
No team in NFL history has ever completed the three-peat. Next year, the reigning champion Chiefs will have the chance, and don’t be surprised to see them take it with both hands. In the uber-competitive AFC, Patrick Mahomes and Co. have continually found a way to come out on top when the chips are down. They seemingly have the number of the Buffalo Bills and have eliminated them in the playoffs in three of the last four seasons, and should they make their way past them again expect them to secure yet another Lombardi. Perhaps only a certain Joe Burrow and his Bengals are the only hope to stop the Chefs from becoming the most dominant dynasty in history.
