Famous athletes who enjoy playing Poker

  • July 19, 2022

Sports stars have spare time just like everyone else. When they aren’t playing their chosen sport, there are some who love to head to a casino and spend some time playing poker.

It’s not a surprise that top sports stars love a game of poker. Michael Hazel from PokerStars says: “The poker table is not a new arena for athletes, as many have, over the years, sought other ways to satisfy their love for competition, and pursue challenges.”

If you are interested in playing and winning big poker prizes online read the crazy detailed review of Global Poker. Before you know it, you could be winning as much as these top sports stars.

Shane Warne

This cricketer had batsmen in a spin as he took 708 test wickets for Australia. After he retired, Warne showed just how good he is at playing poker. He was a regular on the Australian Poker circuit earning well over $100,0000. His best performance was at the 2010 Victoria Poker Championship, finishing third and winning $35,000.

Gerald Piqué

Piqué enjoyed great success playing for Barcelona and was a World Cup winner with Spain. Being based in Barcelona was very handy for the other love of his life, poker. The Spanish city is the home of the European Poker tour and Piqué has had even more success than Warne. He’s won well over half a million dollars, including a second-place finish that landed him a fantastic $391,000.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese footballer has had an amazing football career, from his days at Manchester United to Real Madrid, is now looking likely to land the Serie A title with Juventus. He’s not just a genius on the pitch but the poker table too. So much that he has become a member of the PokerStars team. He famously won a poker match against ‘Breaking Bad’ star Aaron Paul. He’s been helpful for them as the company attempted to take their game to a new audience. Ronaldo is quoted as saying that he plays poker because of the “competition, strategy and fun and although football is my world, poker has always been my game.”

He’s not the only Ronaldo to enjoy success at football and poker. The Brazilian World Cup winning forward scored over 200 goals in his career. When he retired, Ronaldo became friends with Brazilian poker professional Andre Akkari. He did a pretty good job too. Like his Portuguese namesake, he is also joined Team PokerStars and won $42,180 in the 2015 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure event.

Richard Seymour

This American Footballer knows what it’s like to be a winner. He’s won three Superbowls with the New England Patriots. He’s not just a great team player, Seymour has shown great form on the poker table. This isn’t a guy who just plays at his local casino, he’s competed on the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker. He’s won over $600,000 and $376,360 of that was won when he made the final table at a Roller event and finished third.
