Common Blackjack Myths That Need To Go

  • July 18, 2022

Blackjack has been around for a long time and this period was enough for people to generate myths and other kinds of beliefs about the game. So if we let these myths take shape, we would have to see more of them because we all know that a lie generates another one. As a result, we decided to take matters into our own hands and clear all the myths surrounding the game of blackjack.

So if you have been playing blackjack or want to give it a try, make sure to be away from these myths as they don’t necessarily teach you anything.

1. Losing consecutive hands means that you are due for a win.

  • The truth – losing several hands in a row doesn’t increase your chances of winning.

One of the biggest myths about blackjack is that people believe that you will eventually start winning after consecutive losses. Since magic and blackjack don’t work together, this is nothing but a myth and does not stand in the way of statistics. Considering the fact that cards have no memory, you are not going to magically earn a victory after facing back-to-back losses.

Each hand that has been dealt in the game provides you with the same odds of winning.

2. Taking insurance when you’re dealt a blackjack is important.

  • The truth – taking insurance when being dealt with blackjack is one of the worst times to do so.

Experts have constantly suggested that taking insurance when being dealt with blackjack is the wrong time to do so mainly because of all that the situation puts forward. When being dealt with 20 or blackjack, you will be holding cards of value that are also wanted by the dealer. Since you have the winning hand, the dealer will be left with little chance to get blackjack. So why take insurance when you don’t need it?

3. Let’s assume the dealer has 10 in the hole and play blackjack.

  • The truth – basing one’s strategy on the myth that the dealer has 10 in the hole will not be of great use in achieving anything.

Jack, King and Queen are the only cards in the hole that have a value of 10. As a result, the remaining cards are not valued at 10 leaving you with a 30% chance where the dealer has 10 in the hole. So it is fair to say that basing your strategy on this myth will be done on the basis of pure assumption. Whether or not you want to play blackjack games on this front is up to you but believing in a myth will do no good.

4. The main objective of blackjack is to try and get close to 21.

  • The truth – the objective of blackjack, let alone the main objective, is not to try and get close to 21.

Since 21 is considered as the magic number by many who play blackjack, they tend to hold on to the myth that the main objective of the game is to do nothing but try and come close to 21. This myth needs to be forgotten because the way to win a hand at blackjack is to beat the dealer with higher value cards or by not breaking when the dealer breaks. By focusing on these moves rather than eying 21, you can surely get things moving.

5. Being a math whiz can help you be a successful player.

  • The truth – learning the basics of blackjack and practising the same is what makes you a successful player.

Successful blackjack players have years of experience, accurate knowledge of the game and an understanding that helps them read different types of games. They may or may not be good at maths because the thing that helps them become successful is not maths. So forget about this myth and look towards exploring blackjack rather than believing statements put forward as facts.

6. Unskilled players can hurt your chances.

  • The truth – an unskilled player can in no way hurt your chances of winning.

One of the main reasons why people believe an unskilled player can ruin their chances of winning is when they hit. Because when they do so, the order of the cards is mixed up and thus, it leads to few chances of victory. Well, let’s get into reality. The order of the cards does not have a drastic effect on an individual’s chances of winning. So whether or not an unskilled player hits or not, the outcome can still be controlled according to how you play the game.

7. One cannot win at blackjack because it is a game of luck.

  • The truth – though blackjack does require the element of luck, it is not the only driving force of the game.

If you get ready to play blackjack based on the factor of luck alone, you will not be winning anything, let alone trying to win anything. Rather than overriding on luck, you need to make critical decisions that help you move forward. For that purpose, practice and experience need to come into the picture as these two aspects will certainly help you get it all. So avoid depending on luck and instead look at making moves that can seriously help you win.

8. Progressive betting systems can be used to overcome the house edge.

  • The truth – progressive betting systems are not designed to help players go above the house edge.

A major myth that many tend to believe is that progressive betting systems can be used to overcome the various challenges that come with the house edge. While it does sound believable, it is far from reality and has no substantial evidence to claim it to be real. Progressive betting systems cannot mathematically provide players with an edge.

So forget about this myth and look towards blackjack facts rather than myths.
