The French Open is the second of the grand slams to take place each year. It is staged in Paris, France over a two week period in mid May/early June. The French Open is officially called the Roland Garros tournament. It is the best clay court tournament in the world.

This has led to the evolution of clay court specialists. These are tennis players who are much better on clay than any other surface. As a result some of the worlds best players including Federer are yet to win a French Open. In 2006 Rafael Nadal successfully defended his title.
