The tournament is currently called the Open Seat due to its sponsors. It takes place in the last week of April and is played on clay courts. It is unique in that it has a very large field with 56 players competing in the main draw. The tournament was first staged in 1953.

Matches are played at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona. Spanish players have dominated the event in recent years winning the last four titles. Rafael Nadal has won the event for three years running after he defeated Guillermo Canas 6 - 3, 6 - 4 in the 2007 final.
