Victor Hanescu was born on July 21st, 1981 in Bucharest. He turned pro in 1999 and reached a career high ranking of 35 in December 2005. Shortly afterwards he suffered a severe rib injury and was out for almost a whole season. As a result his ranking fell to 759.

In 2007 Hanescu returned winning three titles on the Challenger Circuit. He then reached his first final on the ATP Tour in Bucharest. Unfortunately he was defeated by Gilles Simon. This result helped Hanescu improve his ranking and get back into the top 100.
