The Welsh Open was first played in 1992 and is a professional snooker ranking event. The tournament takes place in late February or early March. The Welsh Open is held at the Newport Centre, Kingsway, Newport. The top 32 ranked players and 16 qualifiers compete for the title.
 
 
RECENT HISTORY
 
In recent years the tournament has had different names due to various sponsors. The 2006 winner netted a cool £35,000. The current champion is Neil Robertson. After leading Andrew Higginson 6 - 2 in the final he lost 6 straight frames. He bounced back however to win the last three and win the final 9 - 8.
