The Masters is not an official ranking event but is regarded as one of the leading snooker tournaments. It offers the second highest prize fund. It has a smaller field with the top 16 players receiving invitations and a small number of wildcards are handed out. In 2006 nineteen players took part.
 
RECENT HISTORY
 
The Masters was first played in 1975 and is held at the newly built Wembley Arena. It offers one of the biggest capacities in snooker. The event is held in January and is aired live on BBC television. The current champion of the tournament is Mark Selby who defeated Stepehen Lee in the final 10 - 3 for his first ranking title.
