TYPES OF POKER

Welcome to our types of poker page. Here we offer a brief introduction to the different types of poker you are likely to come across when playing online poker. We offer a brief description of how each game is played. Most online poker rooms allow you to choose which type of poker you would like to play.

TEXAS HOLDEM POKER

Texas Holdem Poker is by far and away the most popular type of poker. When you visit a poker room you will see quite clearly that most of the players are competing at Texas Holdem.

There are generally three varieties which are Limit, Pot Limit and No Limit, This difference is the amount you can bet.

Texas holdem can be played with between 2 - 10 players on a table. The rules are simple and its face past are reason why it has become so popular. Each player receives 2 private cards face down. There are then 5 community cards in the centre of the table which are shared between the players.

There are 4 rounds of betting and players must use their two private cards and three community cards to make up a hand. The highest hand at the showdown wins the pot.

OMAHA POKER

Omaha is very similar to TExas Holdem Poker with the main difference being each player receives 4 private cards rather than 2. It can be played with 2 - 10 players at a table.

There are 4 betting rounds and 5 community cards in the centre of the table. Players must use 3 of these cards and 2 of their own to create a hand.

There are two forms of Omaha poker. They are Omaha Hi and Omaha Hi Lo. In the Hi Lo version players are looking to create the highest valued and/or lowest valued qualifying hand.

SEVEN CARD STUD

Seven Card Stud can be played with 2 - 8 player at a table. Unlike the previous types of poker each player must put in an ante before they receive their cards. In total there are 5 betting rounds.

Each player receives 3 cards face down and 4 cards face up. They must use 5 of the 7 cards to create the best possible hand.

As with Omaha Poker there are two types of Seven Card Stud. These are Seven Card Stud Hi and Seven Card Stud Hi Lo where players are looking to create the highest valued and/or lowest valued qualifying hand.

FIVE CARD DRAW

Five Card Draw is the oldest form of poker and still very popular. Players have to put in an ante before they receive their cards. Each player is then given 5 cards face down.

There are two betting rounds in between players can disregard and change any number of cards.

CARIBBEAN STUD POKER

Caribbean Stud Poker is different in that you are competing against the dealer and not other players at your table. It is up to you how much you stake and to win you must beat the dealers hand.

The cards that other players on the table do not matter and have no relevance to whether you win or not. There is less skill in this form of poker.
