TABLE POSITION

Welcome to our page on table position. Here we offer a explanation into the importance of table position in a game of poker. Where you are sitting in relation to the dealer button is so important in good poker strategy. The closer you are to the dealer button the bigger the advantage.

There are four different positions on a table to consider. They are early, middle, late and the blinds. Early is the first three seats to the left of the big blind. Middle position is the following three seats and late position is the two seats proceeding the blinds.

EARLY POSITION

When you are in early position on the table just after the blinds you are a massive disadvantage. It is important to play very tight and only the very best hands. Small pairs and suited connectors should definitely be folded and if you do hit a big pair it is important to put in a big raise to force other players to fold.

MIDDLE POSITION

When you find yourself in a middle position you can play a bit looser with your starting hands. You can begin to call with middle pairs such as 55 and 66. Hands such as AQ become stronger and are definitely worth playing. It is important though to be aware of the players that are after you. If they are aggressive a big raise would be an unwise play.

Other hands such as small pairs are also worth playing. If several players have called it is worth lcalling yourself , in the hope you hit your set on the flop and land a big pot. If everyone else has folded then a raise can be considered.

LATE POSITION

Late position is where good players make their money. You have a massive advantage as you get to see other players act first. You can start playing a lot more starting hands even cards such as K10 suited and suited connectors suddenly become strong hands in a late position.

It is important to be aware of what players have done before you. If everyone prior to you has folded then you can put in a raise. However if several players have limped in then it is worth just calling.

THE BLINDS

The blinds are completely different to any other table position as you already have chips committed into the pot. It is always important to remember that after the flop you will be first to act and so will be at a big disadvantage. It is sometimes difficult to decide whether to defend your blinds against a raise.

Any unsuited cards should be folded. If several players have limped in followed by a raise then a call may well be worth it to try and land a big pot.
