POKER RULES

Welcome to our poker rules page. On this page we have listed the basic rules of online poker. If you are new to poker then we strongly suggest you learn the rules before you begin playing the game.

We start by explaining the rules of Texas Holdem Poker as this is the most popular game. There are other types of online poker that you can enjoy. To see how they differ visit our poker types page.

TEXAS HOLDEM POKER

A dealer button denotes which player deals the hands. Online cards are dealt automatically. The two players to the left of the dealer button have to bet. These bets are called the blinds. There is small blind and a big blind.

The big blind is always twice the amount of the small blind. The blinds are used as an ante and make up the pot.

Each player then receives two cards face down that only they can see. The player to the left of the big blind then begins the betting. A player can call, raise or fold. A call is when the player matches the big blind, this is the minimum bet required to stay in the hand.

If a player feels he has a strong hand he can raise. Alternatively if a player has a weak hand he can fold without placing a bet. If a player raises the bet above the big blind other players on the table must match the raise to stay in the hand.

Once everyone has bet three community cards are placed face up in the centre of the table. This is referred to as the flop..

Any player can use the community cards in the centre of the table. Another round of betting follows where players have the opportunity to check without placing a bet. Alternatively they can raise the pot forcing the other players to call or fold. Once each player has made their decision a card is burnt before a 4th community card is dealt called the turn.

This is then followed by another round of betting the same as after the flop. A fifth community card is then dealt known as the river . A final round of betting then takes place and the player with the best hand wins the pot.

Hands are made up of 5 cards from the 7 available (2 private cards dealt at the beginning and the 5 community cards in the centre of the table).

There are three forms of Texas Holdem Poker. They are Limit, Pot Limit and No Limit. Limit is where players are limited to how much they can raise. Pot Limit is where players can only raise what is in the pot at that given time. No Limit is where there are no restrictions on how much a player can bet.
