The Epsom Derby is a Group 1 race for three year old colts and fillies. It is one of the biggest thoroughbred horse races in the whole world. The race is staged at Epsom Downs in June. It gets massive crowds of over 100,000 people. The Derby is the second part of the Triple Crown.

Recently the race has been contested by colts only. Horses prepare for the race by running in Derby Trails. Winners of the race often go on to race in big international races. The race first took place in 1661 and is raced over a distance of 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 10 yards. It is one of the five classic races in the UK.
