Tiger Woods entered the event with a knee injury but no one knew just how bad it was. He battled through the pain barrier and produced some remarkable golf. However he needed to hole a 15 foot birdie putt on the last to force an 18 hole playoff against Rocco Mediate. Woods did not disappoint.

The playoff proved just as exciting as Woods let a two shot lead slip and again had to birdie the final hole to avoid handing the title to Mediate. Once again he delivered and a bogey from Mediate on the first extra hole gave Woods his 14th Major. It was later discovered Woods injury was serious and he would miss the rest of the season.
