The Open Championship is often referred to as the British Open to avoid confusion with the US Open, another of the golf majors. It is the oldest of the four major championships and was first played in 1860. The tournament is always held on a links course and officiated by the Royal and Ancient.
It takes place on the weekend of the 3rd Friday in July. It has been recognised as an official event on the PGA Tour since 1995, meaning any winnings count towards the US Money List. Players from all around the world can try to qualify. |
