The Joburg Open is a new event and was first held in 2007. It is co-sanctioned between the Sunshine and European Tours. The tournament is the first event of the year taking place in early January. It is staged at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.

The Joburg Open is unique in that it has a field of 200 players, the largest on tour. This is possible because the first two rounds are played on two separate courses. The current champion is Richard Sterne from South Africa who won on the second playoff hole.
