The Buick Invitational was first played in 1952. It has been played at Torrey Pines Golf Club, San Diego, California since 1968. There are two courses which are used for the tournament, North and South. The South course measures over 7,600 yards.

The course is one of the players favourites and attracts a very strong field and some of the worlds best golfers. It has been selected to host the 2008 US Open. In recent years the tournament has been dominated by Tiger Woods who has won the event on five of the last six occasions.
