Stockport County were just minutes away from being relegated to the Conference until a last minute goal by Leyton Orient against Oxford United saw Oxford relegated instead. This saved Stockport from consecutive relegation's after they finished 24th in League One the previous season.

In 2007/08 Stockport County narrowly missed out on automatic promotion. However they were not phased and beat Rochdale at Wembley to win the League Two playoffs.
