Southend United currently play their football in the Championship and are nicknamed the Shrimpers. They are managed by Steve Tilson. They play their home games at Roots Hall which has a capacity of 12,306. They won successive promotions in 2005 and 2006.

Southend were founded in 1906 and have spent most of their history in the bottom two leagues. However when Steve Tilson took over in 2003 things changed. They gained promotion through the League Two playoffs, then were the League One Champions in 2006.

They spent just one season in the Championship and after being relegated they sold their top goalscorer Freddie Eastwood to Wolves. In 2007/08 they reached the league on playoffs but lost out to Doncaster Rovers in the final.
