Scunthorpe United were very close to be relegated from the Football League in 2004. The following season they surprised everyone by achieving automatic promotion to League One. They had a good solid first season in League One finishing in 12th position.

Things continued to improve fopr Scunthorpe as manager Brian Laws helped Scunthorpe to the top on League One. He then left to take control of Sheffield Wednesday. However Nigel Adkins an ex physio for the club took control as they won the league title. They failed to make an impact in the Championship and were relegated in their first season.
