Colchester United Football Club were formed in 1937. They first joined the league in 1950 and have spent most of their history in the lower leagues. Colchester United have a new stadium for the 2008/09 season called Colchester Community Stadium. It has a capacity of 10,000.

In the 2005/06 season they finished 2nd in League One to gain promotion to the Championship for the first time in the clubs history. After gaining promotion their manager left to take control of Hull City and caretaker boss Geraint Williams took over the role.

The 2007/08 season was a poor one for Colchester as they were unable to avoid relegation from the Championship. They won only 7 games and finished 15 points from safety.
