Carlisle United currently play their football in League One and are nicknamed the Cumbrians. They are managed by John Ward. They play their home games at Brunton Park which has a capacity of 16,661. They won back to back promotions in 2005 and 2006.

They were relegated from the football league in 2004 losing their 76 year league history. They bounced straight back via the Conference playoffs. The following the season they were surprise promotion contenders and went on to take the League Two title to earn successive promotions.

Carlisle came agonizingly close to winning promotion to the Championship in 2007/08. With just four matches left they had a six point cushion over third place. However they only managed one point from their last four games and missed out on automatic promotion. They then lost to Leeds in the playoff Semi Finals despite winning the 1st leg 2 - 1.
