Bristol City suffered this fate in 1982 but only spent a few seasons in the bottom division. They gained their last promotion to League One in 1999 and have remained in the division ever since. Their first season back in the Championship was a huge success. In fact they were top of the table with just five league games left. They won just one of their last five matches and had to settle for a playoff place. After beating Crystal Palace in the semi finals they were denied in place in the Premiership losing to Hull City at Wembley.
