Serbia were previously known as Yugoslavia until 2003 when the Serbia and Montenegro team was formed. They then qualified for the 2006 World Cup .Serbia and Montenegro failed to gain a single point from the so called 'group of death' losing to Argentina, Holland and the Ivory Coast.

In June 2006 Serbia was declared an independent state. This did not affect their position in the World Cup as they played under the same flag for one last time. They have applied for the European Championships as Serbia and Montenegro but hope to compete as just Serbia.
