Since the split of the Soviet Union Russia have failed to equal the heights of the USSR team, a significant number of the USSR's players came from the other republics. Russia have qualified for two World Cups in 1994 and 2002 and three European Championships in 1996 and 2004, 2008.
After the split of the Soviet Union Russia played its first game in 1992 with most of the USSR players from other republics playing for Russia. They qualified for the 1994 World Cup but failed to make an impression losing their first two matches to Brazil and Sweden. |
