Malta have not qualified for a major competition and as of October 12th 2006 they have only won four competitive matches. Their four wins have come against Greece (2 - 0), Iceland (2 - 1), Estonia (1 - 0) and in October 2006 they beat Hungary 2 - 1.

They were drawn in Group 8 for the 2006 World Cup Qualifying. From their ten matches they managed three draws and suffered seven defeats. Their draws came against Iceland, Croatia and Bulgaria. They only managed to score four goals whilst conceding thirty two.
