Lithuania have always been one of the weaker teams in Europe mainly because they are one of a few countries where football is not their main sport. Lithuania pulled of a huge upset in the 2008 European Championship qualifying when they drew 1 -1 with World Champions Italy.

Lithuania are becoming a difficult team to beat. In their attempts to qualify for the 2006 World Cup they only conceded nine goals in their ten group matches and had good draws against Spain and Belgium. They amassed 10 points finishing 5th in their group.
