Georgia played their first match against Lithuania in 1990, before that all Georgian players played their football for the USSR national team. Georgia have never qualified for a major competition but have only been entered into the qualification stage since the European Championships in 1996.

They were handed a tough draw for the World Cup 2006 Qualifying. They played in Group 2 and only managed to win 2 of the twelve matches. They did draw with some top teams including Ukraine, Turkey and Denmark. They are a tough team to beat at home.
