Belarus played their first match against Lithuania in June 1992 after the split of the Soviet Union. Before this they played their football as part of the USSR. Belarus have never qualified for a major competition. Like many of the new European Nations they are gradually improving.

In their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign Belarus finished in 5th place in their group with 10 points from their 10 games. They had wins over Moldova and Scotland. They also drew four of their games including an excellent 2 - 2 draw with Norway.
