Austria has qualified for seven World Cups, the most recent in 1998. Their best run came in 1934 when they lost 1 - 0 to Italy in the semi finals. They have never qualified for the European Championships but will enter it for the first time when they co-host the tournament with Switzerland in 2008.

Austria had little success in Euro 2008 despite playing in front of home crowds. They were beaten by both Germany and Croatia by 0 - 1 and picked up just one point with a 1 - 1 draw with Poland in their second match to finish third in their group.
