The World Masters has been sponsored by Winmau for over 30 years. It was founded in 1974 and is a BDO event. It is the oldest major darts tournament and receives live coverage on the BBC. The tournament takes place at Leisure World in Bridlington.

In 2007 the event was moved to November and clashed with the Grand Slam of Darts. As a result many of the leading BDO players were missing from the event. John Walton made history in 2007 by hitting a perfect nine dart finish. Robert Thornton is the current champion after he defeated Darryl Fitton.
