The PDC World Championship was formed in 1994 when there was a dispute between players and the BDO. Since then the tournament has grown from strength to strength and is now the richest darts tournament offering a prize fund of £600,00.

The event takes place in late December with the final taking place early in the new year. In 2008 the tournament moved to Alexander Palace and is currently sponsored by Ladbrokes. Phil Taylor has dominated the event winning it 11 times although the current champion is John Part.
