Mickelson leads at Riveira

Overall I had to be pleased with the start my three tips made this week in the Northern Trust Open.

After his superb win at Pebble Beach last week I expected Mickelson to start well at Riviera and he did just that with a bogey free 65 to take a one shot lead.

KJ Choi also made a good start with a 2 under 68 that saw his odds cut in half by the bookmakers.

It wasn't such good news for Kevin Na who shot 3 over par on Thursday, but a 67 or 68 today would get him back into the tournament.

Mickelson's nearest challengers are JB Holmes and Hunter Mahan. Holmes is a name that caught my eye when looking through previous results here at Riviera.

He has a fine record in this event and was it not for his poor recent form I might just have backed him this week.

Luke Donald made a steady start on his return to action with a 1 under par 69. He is tied with fellow Englishman Justin Rose.

Hopefully we can see another master class from Mickelson today so he can pull away from the chasing pack going into the weekend.
