Key Points
- This tennis betting tip is from the first round of the WTA event in Doha between Yanina Wickmayer (27) and Ayumi Morita (66).
- Wickmayer played some good tennis in Paris last week to reach the semi-final narrowly losing out to Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals on Saturday. Less than 3 days later she's on court in another continent in a totally different climate and in very different slower conditions.
- In Doha the courts are slower than average for hard courts and it's often windy so big hitters like Wickmayer often find it difficult to find their rhythm. Retrievers like Morita can be successful here.
- Morita has had a bad start to the year and is desperate for a win. She lost early in Pattaya last week so has had plenty of time to prepare for this week's event.
- She hasn't been playing badly but has just been unfortunate to not get wins on the board this year. In Auckland she lost to the eventual winner Zheng (48) in 3 sets and then in Hobart she was up against the defending champion Gajdosova (34) in the first round. In Melbourne she also had a narrow defeat to Cetkovska (33).
- Last year she was very successful in the early part of the year so now she has a lot of catching up to do (in terms of ranking points) if she doesn't want to take a step backwards in her career.
- She has had some success this year however winning two matches in a Fed Cup, notably one against Hercog (36). This match didn't count towards her ranking but will give her the confidence of winning a match.
- Tomorrow I think she has a great chance against Wickmayer and it will certainly be a contrast in styles. Morita is fast around the court and is good at keeping the ball in play while Wickmayer will go for her shots and try to finish the points early.
- Wickmayer may well get frustrated with the conditions and it's possible she's not had much time to practice since arriving from Paris.
- Morita lost their only previous meeting at the French Open last year in two close sets but this time around I think she'll have the extra motivation to win this match.
- Wickmayer may be happy to save her energy for next week's tournament in Dubai and maybe she won't mind losing this match as she has no ranking points to defend.
- I think Morita is a great value bet here.
