Key Points
- This tennis betting tip is from the WTA Doha event and the first round match between Mona Barthel (39) and Caroline Garcia (150).
- No doubt that Barthel is the better player here but she's just arrived in Doha from Paris and conditions will be completely different.
- Barthel is a tall (6 foot 1) attacking player with a good serve and solid groundstrokes but on a slower court her game is less effective. I don't know if she'll be used to the conditions yet.
- On Friday night after midnight she was still slugging out a 3-setter against Yanina Wickmayer in Paris. It's anyone's guess if she'll be in good shape for a match in another continent in a completely different climate just over 2 days later.
- Garcia is a talented 18 year old who led Sharapova by a set and break at the French Open last year before letting things slip. This week she's come through qualifying and has a good chance of picking up valuable ranking points in the main draw of a WTA Premier event.
- She started off the year well with a run to the semi-final in Quanzhou before losing in the final round of qualifying for Melbourne.
- Last week she had an almost inexplicable loss to Zhou (627) in Pattaya but has followed it up with straight sets wins against Rus (93) and former top 150 player Grandin this week.
- Somehow I think she didn't try too hard in Pattaya in the knowledge that she'd do well this week in Qatar.
- It's possible that Barthel needs some rest, will not give her best tomorrow and will focus her energy on next week's event in Dubai.
- Garcia is a good player on slow courts and the courts in Doha are slower than average for outdoor hard. If this turns into a fitness battle then I'd be happier to have my money on Garcia.
- I would not be happy to risk any money on the German player here and Garcia looks extremely good value!
