Key Points

  • This tennis betting tip is from the US Open quarter final between Roger Federer (#3) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (#11).
  • Despite the gusty winds in New York last night we saw a high quality match between Tsonga and Fish (#8), with the Frenchman playing some outstanding tennis to come back from a set behind to win in 5.
  • The confidence that Tsonga has at the moment is remarkable and it seems he believes he can beat anyone (apart from Djokovic maybe).
  • After winning his last two matches against Federer I see no reason why Tsonga can't do it again.
  • He's playing the best tennis of his career while Federer certainly isn't.
  • His uncompetitive match against the claycourter Monaco (#36) last night tells us nothing about his form, but against Cilic (#27) he didn't seem to be at his best, winning in 4.
  • A couple of years ago we wouldn't have worried about a bit of poor form from Federer, and remained confident that he would pick up his level for the big matches. However these days he rarely plays his best tennis when it matters.
  • If we look back at his matches so far this year I would argue that he's only won 2 big matches (vs Soderling in Madrid and Djokovic at Roland Garros). In general he only wins matches where he's a strong favourite and there's not much pressure on him.
  • On the other hand I would argue that he's lost 7 matches that he would desperately have wanted to win (3 times vs Djokovic, Roland Garros vs Nadal, 2 times against Tsonga and once against Berdych).
  • Basically my point is that Federer has lost his aura of invincibility and I can't see that changing overnight. He's mentally less strong than he used to be and knows that his chances of winning another slam are getting smaller by the day.
  • This price on Tsonga is great as he's playing great tennis and will be extremely tough to beat.
  • He could potentially win this match in straight sets, given the confidence he currently has.
