Key Points

  • This tennis betting tip is from the US Open 1st round match between Marc Gicquel (#97) and Jack Sock (#555).
  • There seems to be a lot of love out there in the market for Jack Sock. You might think that it's because of his ridiculous name that has attracted punters to bet on him but I feel that it's due to the fact that Gicquel hasn't played on hard courts for a long time.
  • He's only played two matches on this surface this year and is yet to win a set. The last time he won a set in a main draw event on outdoor hard courts was back in January 2010.
  • It seems to me he's not taking this tournament seriously. Surely if you hadn't won a set on a surface for a year and a half you would want to play a warm up tournament going into a grand slam?
  • Gicquel has only played on clay this summer and has had mixed results. He's 34 years old and is a long way from the player that got to number 37 in the ATP rankings back in 2008.
  • Jack Sock is the big new hope of American tennis. He's had a few wildcards due to his success at Junior and local level. A 2nd round place at the US Open would appear to justify the USTA's policy of selecting wildcards that are so lowly ranked.
  • He's playing against a player who's lack of practice shows that he's just turned up for the first round loser's cheque. Gicquel has no ranking points to defend and at this stage of his career I doubt he has the motivation to climb back up the rankings.
  • If you've followed my tip on Steve Johnson I suggest you back Jack Sock too. I feel at least one of these two young American wildcards will get a first round win and create the sort of positive headlines that American tennis needs.
  • This price offers very good value in my opinion.
