- This tennis betting tip comes from the 1st round US Open match between Alex Bogomolov Jr (#44) and Steve Johnson (#525).
- Bogomolov is having a great season but has clearly had a helping hand on many occasions.
- He is probably aware that his win against Murray (#5) in Miami was due to a tank from the British number 1 and that his win against Tsonga (#15) two weeks ago was due to the frenchman's injured arm.
- Now his ranking is artificially high in my opinion and he is likely to struggle towards the end of this year.
- In reality he's a challenger level player who's had an unexceptional career and is the type of player a youngster like Johnson would hope to beat.
- Johnson is 21 years old, has a big serve and lots of potential. He's one of the stars on the American college scene at the moment like John Isner was a few years ago.
- He beat Chardy (#87) in Cincinnati in straight sets and Zemlja (#130) in Vancouver.
- He's yet to get a win in a main draw match yet however and needs to make the most of the wildcard he's been offered this week. The USTA obviously see a lot of potential in him but unless he wins a match some time soon he won't get many more of these wildcards.
- Bogomolov is not one of the most honest player on tour. He's been known to put in minimal effort when losing to compatriots from time to time. For example he lost 6-2 6-2 to Blake (#149) earlier this year and he also lost 6-2 6-4 to the out of form Sweeting (#66) in Washington.
- I think there is a very realistic chance that Bogomolov tanks this match. He has no ranking points to defend here from last year. Even if he gives 100% Johnson might get inspired by the occasion and win the match.
