Key Points
- This tennis betting tip is from the 2nd round at the ATP Helsinki Challenger between Adrian Ungur (115) from Romania and Mikhail Elgin (558) from Russia.
- Ungur is a claycourter and I'm sure even he was surprised by his win against the promising Matthew Ebden (87) in the last round.
- My feeling is that the Aussie was keen to get a flight down under to have a well deserved break over Christmas after what's been a long and successful year for him.
- It was an extremely surprising result if you consider that the Romanian had never previously won a main draw match at challenger or ATP level on indoor hard.
- The market is assuming that Ungur will follow up his first round win with another win today and the odds are just ridiculous.
- Elgin is 30 years old and is an experienced player on indoor hard. He reached the semi final here in 2007 and in 2008 he got to the quarter-finals at ATP St Petersburg.
- He was ranked as high as 123 just 2 years ago. He must be struggling to get by on the prize money he gets at his current ranking so today's match will be huge for him.
- It will mean a lot less to Ungur and whether he wins or loses today it will hardly effect his ranking. He may not even want to qualify for the Australian Open (as his record on hard courts is so bad) so finishing the year outside the top 100 may be a blessing in disguise for him.
- Ungur leads the head to head 2-0 and the last match was a very one-sided match in favour of the Romanian (6-1 6-0). This is why we're getting such good odds on Elgin today.
- Don't be put off by this recent result however. I'm sure that Elgin wasn't at his best in that match and it's possible that we get an equally one-sided match in favour of the Russian today. These sorts of bizzare results happen pretty frequently, praticularly on the challenger tour.
- Elgin has done well to come through 4 matches this week without the loss of a set and he will be confident ahead of this match.
- This match is played on court 3 so is very unlikely to be streamed live. Therefore if Ungur gives less than 100% effort very few people will even know about it.
- I'm sure that statistics would tell you that more upsets happen on outside courts than they do on centre courts throughout the year at both ATP and challenger level.
- I expect Elgin to win this match and a retirement from Ungur is one of the many possibilities, so place your bets with bwin; they would pay out on Elgin if that were to happen.
