Key Points

  • This tennis betting tip comes from the first round of the Cincinnati Masters and the match between Andrey Golubev (#101) and Stanislas Wawrinka (#14).
  • This tip is all about value. I don't think Golubev will win but think he has a real chance given Wawrinka's recent poor form.
  • Golubev is on a terrible run of form losing his last 18 main tour matches in a row, but has played some decent tennis in some of these matches. Look at his match against Soderling (#5) which he almost won in Dusseldorf as an example.
  • He has better shots than many in the top 100 but lacks the winning mentality.
  • He will probably expect to lose this match so may have a more relaxed approach to his play today.
  • He's actually a similar player to Wawrinka, hitting powerful heavy ground-strokes, but both players are prone to unforced errors.
  • Wawrinka had a good run to the quarter-finals in Montreal and now he will be starting to focus on peaking for the US Open. It's unclear how important this week's tournament is for him and he doesn't have many ranking points to defend.
  • Wawrinka doesn't always give maximum effort in every match he plays. His loss against Brown (#123) earlier this year was an example of this sort of match. Another example was (perhaps significantly) the Davis Cup match between Switzerland and Kazakhstan last year which the Swiss somehow managed to lose.
  • From betting on tennis over the last few years I've noticed that these sorts of losing runs often come to an end in the most surprising of circumstances.
  • Anything could happen in this match, even a retirement from Wawrinka is a possibility. Therefore I'm betting with betfair as they would pay out if Wawrinka retires after the first set.
