Key Points
- This tennis betting tip is from the Australian Open 3rd round match between Kei Nishikori (26) and Julien Benneteau (39).
- Benneteau was really struggling with his back and shoulder in his match this morning against Gilles Simon, so I'm trying to get in early to get some good odds on Nishikori in this match. I'm fairly confident Nishikori will be a strong favourite by the start of the match.
- Benneteau is physically tired after losing the final in Sydney on Sunday morning and coming straight to Melbourne to play his first match just over a day later. After today's five setter against the out of sorts Simon, which lasted nearly 4.5 hours, he will not really be looking forward to his next match
- Nishikori is the higher ranked player and is certainly the more talented player of the two. If he hadn't been out with injuries in the early part of his career he would be a more established name in the top 30.
- He's only 22 years old but he's got plenty of experience on tour. At the age of 18 he beat Ferrer at the US Open and took a set off Nadal at Queen's. Therefore a third round Grand Slam match against Benneteau is not something that will phase him.
- The winner of this match will get to play Tsonga in the next round and I think that is a match that would appeal much more to Nishikori, who's fully fit, than Benneteau, who usually gets beaten easily by his compatriot.
- Nishikori is very steady from the back of the court and will therefore be able to keep Benneteau running around court for a long time. He's clever enough to expose his opponents weaknesses and I have no doubt he'll perform well here.
- This is the biggest of the Grand Slams for Japanese players as it's played in a similar time-zone. He will do everything he can to win this match and I'm sure organisers of the tournament will be very happy to see a Japanese player get into the last 16.
- The way Benneteau almost tanked the 3rd and 4th sets against Simon as soon as he was down suggests that he knew he had to save his energy and that he was on the limit of retiring from that match.
- I think Nishikori will win this match fairly comfortably
