Key Points

  • This tennis betting tip is from the 2nd round at the Australian Open between John Isner (17) and David Nalbandian (87).
  • Nalbandian leads the head to head 2-0 between these two but I see no other reason why he should be favourite in this match.
  • Isner was unfortunate last time these two met as he picked up an injury after a few games and had to retire.
  • He'll certainly be motivated to finally get a win under his belt against the Argentine today and he should be confident heading into the match.
  • He's not had the best of starts to the year but neither has Nalbandian. Both of them lost their warm up matches heading into this tournament so we can't read too much into that.
  • Nalbandian is a great player to watch and people have great memories of a player that should probably have won at least one Grand Slam in his career. He's now 30 years old however and his fitness is a big issue in Grand Slams. Last year he managed to scrape past Leyton Hewitt in 5 sets and then had nothing left to give in the 2nd round.
  • He maybe be fitter than he was last year but so is Isner. He showed at the French Open last year that he can even compete with Nadal over 5 sets on clay. Also he says he's had a good off-season and is feeling stronger.
  • He was very impressive in his last match of 2011 coming extremely close to beating Tsonga (6) on his home court. If he can find any of that form he should win this match tonight.
  • Maybe people are reading a bit too much into this interview with Isner where he said he didn't feel to good in his first match. Read a little further though and it's clear that he's as ambitious as ever aiming to get to the top 10 this year.

  • Losing in the 2nd round of the first Grand Slam would not be a good start to the year if Isner does want to achieve this goal and we can expect a fully motivated Isner to come onto court tonight. At times he may look weary and he may hit some appalling shots from time to time but don't be deceived, Isner will keep hitting big serves and be incredibly tough to beat.
  • I think the Nalbandian from about 4 years ago could win this match but not the Nalbandian of 2012.
  • Isner is great value here.
