Key Points

  • Radek Stepanek (#54) has been in great form this week at this ATP 500 tournament.
  • His quarter final win against Verdasco (#19) in straight sets was particularly impressive.
  • He's often played his best tennis on North American hard courts so his success this week is not too surprising.
  • He has an unusual gamestyle, using a lot of slice and trying to come into the net as often as possible.
  • It's a style of play that frustrates many of his opponents.
  • Gael Monfils (#7) may be at his highest ever ranking but his recent form is not really impressive.
  • This year none of his results have been worthy of a top 10 player apart from a good run to the quarters in Paris.
  • Monfils had a good win last night beating Isner (#35) 7-6 in the third set but the match didn't finish until about 1.15am East Coast time.
  • Coming back to play the final at 3pm today will be very tough for Monfils both physically and mentally.
  • Stepanek won his semi-final against Young (#128) much earlier yesterday afternoon in straight sets and will be much better rested and probably better prepared.
  • Monfils leads the head to head 5-2 but I remember watching Stepanek destroy Monfils in Brisbane 18 months ago 6-2 6-1. In that match Monfils was totally unable to respond to Stepanek's variety of shots and all court play.
  • I really don't think there will be much to choose between these players today and therefore all the value lies with Stepanek.
