Key Points
- This tennis betting tip is from the first round at ATP Vina del Mar, Chile, between Carlos Berlocq (55) and Daniel Gimeno-Traver (104).
- Gimeno-Traver (or DGT as he's known) has recently crashed out of the top 100 and will be eager to climb back up with a good performance this week in Chile.
- He's a talented all-court player who's still only 26 years old. Winning a few matches in the next few weeks will be especially important for him as it could be the difference between a year on the challenger circuit or a year on the main tour, with far more prize money on offer.
- He's a more talented player than his opponent tomorrow, although Berlocq can be a very solid baseliner on a clay-court when motivated. I don't think the Argentine will be very motivated however.
- DGT has a poor record against Berlocq, trailing the head to head 3-0 although 2 of those matches went to 3 sets.
- That's just another reason why DGT is likely to be the more motivated player tomorrow.
- Berlocq is 28 years old and has been on tour for a long time. He's spent most of his career on the challenger circuit although he's recently made the leap to the main tour.
- In 2010 when he faced DGT in Bucharest it was the Spaniard who was priced as a 1.44 favourite. Berlocq won the match in a 3rd set tie-break. Berlocq also won another match that year between the two priced as an outsider.
- Last year they played again in Estoril with Berlocq priced at 1.61 favourite and he won in 2 fairly tight sets. This time around DGT is the big outsider and I'm convinced that his price offers good value.
- After a good Australian Open where Berlocq reached the second round to get to his career high ranking, I feel his motivation this week has to be questioned.
- Losing in the first round here wouldn't effect his ranking at all and he's certainly a player who's been known to tank matches that don't mean too much to him in the past. Two examples are his losses to Vagnozzi (199) and Ungur (130) last year.
- Despite their recent differences in form I think this is probably a 50:50 match and all the value is in backing the Spaniard.
