Key Points

  • This tennis betting tip comes from the ATP tournament in Bangkok and the first round match between Donald Young (#55) and Igor Andreev (#100).
  • If anyone had told me a few months ago that Donald Young would be higher ranked than Igor Andreev I'd probably have laughed at them.
  • Young was a promising junior but until very recently had totally failed to make any impression whatsoever on the ATP tour.
  • There's no doubt he got a lucky with his draw in some of the tournaments he played over the summer and many of his opponents were a long way from their best (e.g. Wawrinka, Chela and Baghdatis).
  • His confidence may have improved but he hasn't suddenly become a world-beater overnight and I'm sure he's aware that his current ranking is somewhat false. In my opinion a ranking of 90+ would be a fairer reflection on his ability.
  • On indoor hardcourts his record isn't great. He's only ever been to one challenger final and this was 4 years ago.
  • Andreev is a very solid claycourter but has had some of his best career performances on hard courts.
  • Now aged 28 he could still get back to his best after a poor year.
  • He took Federer to 5 sets at the US Open a few years ago and even led him by a set in Melbourne just last year.
  • Last year he got to the semi final of the indoor tournament in Kuala Lumpur which is played at the same time as this event. Therefore he should be motivated to repeat his success from this time last year.
  • Young on the other hand may not be at his best as he hasn't played since the US Open.
  • He won't have the vocal home support that he has experienced in recent months and certainly won't be gifted the match as it seemed like some of his opponents have done recently.
  • There's not much to choose between these two on this surface but I'm happy to back Andreev as he has far more motivation and experience.
  • At his best he is by far the better player in my opinion.
  • He's a good value bet here.
