Key Points
- This tennis betting tip comes from the match between Donald Young (#55) and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (#35) at the ATP event in Bangkok.
- Garcia-Lopez (or GGL as he's known) is the defending champion here so what is he doing at this price against a player ranked 55 who's never done much outside of North America?
- All I can think is that betting markets have short memories. They are focusing on his good run at the US Open and not his recent defeats against Russell (#102) 6-0 6-3 and Bogomolov (#57) 6-0 6-4.
- Maybe there's a also a bit of herd mentality going on. Punters are all agreeing with each other that Young is a suddenly much improved player and that he will win easily against the out of form GGL. Well I am happy to disagree with them.
- It is possible for a player to improve a lot in a couple of months, but to go from outside the top 100 to become a threat to top players, but to develop the mentality of a top level player is another thing entirely.
- He is only 22 years old and has never been a regular on the ATP tour. He's regularly disappointed since he joined the senior tour after so much was expected of him as a former world number 1 junior.
- He's bound to have a set back at some point and I expect it to come tomorrow morning.
- His record on indoor courts is not impressive at all and he's at his best in America on outdoor courts.
- GGL is a very good indoor player and in winning this tournament last year he had impressive wins against Gulbis (#25), Nadal (#1) and Nieminen (#60).
- He's struggled with injuries over the summer but he looked to be coming back to form at the US Open, playing a good match against Simon (#12).
- I expect GGL to get back some form here in Bangkok. He will enjoy being on indoor courts again as the rallies are shorter and the matches are often decided more by pure tennis skills rather than physical endurance.
- He's such a talented player and great to watch on indoor courts. If he plays anything like his best tennis he should win this match.
- He's 6 years older than Young so his experience should help him to make things tough for Young.
- It could be a close match but I expect GGL to win most of the big points.
- There's certainly a great deal of value to be had in backing GGL to win this match.
