Tomas Berdych v Fabio Fognini

Tennis - Australian Open - 22 Jan 01:30

Very excited about what Fabulous Fabio Fognini (#27) can achieve this season. I've no doubt over the past 12 months he's started to produce the best tennis of his career.

Maybe his relationship with Pennetta has played a part in that but his on court antics certainly don't seem to be effecting his performances as much as they used to.

The head to head with Berydch (#20) stands at 2-2 although their only hard court meeting was a convincing win for the Czech star. He beat Fognini 7-6 6-0 6-0 in the US Open in 2011. Again that was back in the time the temperamental Italian often used to throw the towel in.

Surface stats favour Berdych but Fognini's record on hard courts has improved significantly in recent seasons. In his career Fognini has won just 45% of hard court matches. However in the past 12 months he has a 17-9 winning record on this surface (65%).

All but 2 of those wins came in either Grand Slams or Masters Series events which highlights the level he's been playing at.

Fognini also played some excellent tennis on indoor hard courts towards the end of 2017 with a run to the final in St.Petersberg and semi finals in Stockholm. He had wins over top 20 players Bautista Agut and Jack Sock in those tournaments

Berdych has a worse surface record in the past 12 months at 12-8. If you'd backed him in all 20 of those matches your ROI would be -18.5%.

Prior to this event Berdych had lost 8 of his last 16 hard court matches at either Grand Slam or Masters Series events, very poor.

I had Fognini at around 3.0 here, but always like to allow some room for error in my pricing so at 3.4 I'm going to be cautious here at go half stakes.
