Aus Open Women's Outright - Kerber E/W

Tennis - Aus Open - Women - 18 Jan 00:00

I decided to be patient for the first few days before giving this tip. So here are my reasons for sticking with the German.

First of all, Kerber is a former winner here at Melbourne, beating none other than the toughest, Serena Williams in the final back in 2016. So experience is not an issue for the German.

While 2017 was a forgettable year for the former world no.1 (didn't manage to win a grandslam), she also ended the year with 4 consecutive losses. All that has changed as Kerber started 2018 spectacularly well winning every singles match at the recent Hopman Cup and more impressively, continuing that form to winning the Sydney title a week later.

She is currently on a 10 match win streak with her 6-0 6-4 win over Friedsam in the last round. In all these performances, the key highlight for me was Kerber's confidence on returns, consistent serves and bringing back her natural weapon on the table, defense.

In Melbourne conditions if you can continue to balance all three attributes, you should have every chance to win the title, especially with the added bonus of experience.

Next, her opponents:

In her own draw, Sharapova looks the likely threat with an 8-2 form. But she has does have a tricky Sevastova to get past tomorrow and her serves haven't been too amazing in recent weeks. She also lost to an underdog in Siniakova at Shenzhen.

Halep has won 8 matches in a row but didn't look that good in the first round against Aiava who was 5-2 up in the first set and even had set points. Still, I believe the Romanian is good enough to knock out another bookie favourite Pliskova, should they collide in the coming days.

In the bottom half of the draw, bookie favourite Svitolina looks a decent bet to reach the final after 2 in-form players Bencic and Goerges were knocked out in straight sets yesterday (didn't see that coming!). Still, the Ukranian needed a decider to get past Siniakova in the last round. And Wozniacki survived the biggest scare so far amongst the favourites against Fett.

In summary, with a few question marks around in other players, I feel Kerber gets most of the tick marks from my side due to her sensational form.
Opting for Angelique hence.
