Gary Lees Vs Jimmy White

Snooker - World Seniors Championship - 30 Jan 22:00

Let me put it this way. I think most of the bookies have been very kind in the way that this match has been priced up. Jimmy White is still very much a part of the world snooker tour and competing to a reasonable standard. He gets a great amount of support wherever he plays and still thrives on playing in these events on the TV.

Meanwhile, Gary Lees is an amateur player who didn't set the world alight when he was an active professional. His later years were very much spent on the Challenge Tour and prior to this seniors campaign he had only entered the amateur qualifying rounds of the Ruhr Open in October 2015 since 2005.

Lees wouldn't have played a lot of matches on the TV in his entire career, while it feels like Jimmy White's entire life has taken place in front of a camera so he has all of the experience on that level. It may only be best-of-3 frames match meaning upsets are possible, but it doesn't give Lees much time to settle either. Even though Lees did beat Mark King in qualifying, a 2-1 victory completed on a re-spotted black is not enough to scare me away from betting on Jimmy White to win this one.

Just to prove that White still has it, he has come close to beating top 16 players Stephen Maguire and Barry Hawkins this season losing both of those matches in deciding frames, and last August he overcame one of the most talented youngsters on the circuit in Oliver Lines 5-3 in Shanghai Masters qualifying.
