Steven Hallworth Vs Mark Selby -3.5

Snooker - German Masters - 03 Feb 13:00

The first match on tomorrow sees defending champion Mark Selby take on Steven Hallworth and with Selby being a big favourite I thought it would be a struggle to find any value in this match, to see the -3.5 handicap priced up as odds against by William Hill was a big surprise.

Steven Hallworth is not someone I rate hugely as a player, and that has been backed up by some of his results. The -3.5 handicap in a best-of-9 means that he can only win one frame effectively as Selby would need to win 5-1 or better. In the International Championships Hallworth took on Stuart Bingham and could only manage one frame, in a heavy 6-1 defeat and to be fair Stuart didn't play that well. Meanwhile, in the UK Championships Hallworth lost 6-1 again, this time to Ben Woollaston who is not even a top 16 player.

In five European Tour events, Hallworth has failed to win a single game and none of those defeats (2 of which were 4-0 whitewashes) were against a player anywhere near as good as Mark Selby.

Mark is of course the defending champion and on my snooker blogs preview of the event, I have in fact tipped Selby to defend the title successfully. In the Championship League at Crondon Park Mark was striking the ball superbly and looked in some fantastic form which he has now for a while.

Steven also won't be helped by this match being played on the TV table either, he doesn't have anywhere close to the same experience on the TV table that Selby does so it may take him a while to settle into this match and how the table plays, because the conditions are different under the TV lights and it does make a difference.
